At Maths Pathway, our goal has always been to help schools deliver high-quality, personalised maths education at scale. Over the years, we’ve worked with thousands of teachers to develop programs that are grounded in research, built for real classrooms, and focused on what matters most—student growth.

Today, we offer two core curriculum solutions: Maths Pathway and Instructive. While they share many of the same goals and tools, they’re designed to support different teaching models and school needs.

So, what’s the difference?

Let’s take a closer look.

Maths Pathway: structured personalised learning

Maths Pathway combines a comprehensive set of research-backed tools and practices into one structured program designed to deliver the curriculum while also providing truly personalised learning.

At the heart of the model is a two-week learning cycle, which runs like this:

  1. Diagnostic and goal setting – Students complete formative diagnostics to identify their current understanding, and set personalised learning goals.
  2. Independent learning – Students are delivered curriculum-aligned modules based on their unique learning needs, always working in their zone of proximal development.
  3. Small group work – Teachers work with students in small groups to provide targeted support and feedback.
  4. Assessment – Students complete individualised topic tests to demonstrate their progress and inform the next cycle.
  5. Feedback – Teachers and students meet to discuss their assessment results and set goals for the next cycle.

This structured cycle enables students to build deep understanding while giving teachers clear visibility into student progress. Everything from assessments to reporting is built in, making it a true all-in-one core maths solution.

Instructive: where explicit teaching meets personalised learning

Instructive is built on the same foundation as Maths Pathway, with personalised learning at the heart of the program. But with Instructive, teachers are supported to incorporate more explicit teaching and have greater flexibility in how they deliver the curriculum.

That means the program supports explicit teaching alongside personalisation, so teachers can deliver age-based, curriculum-aligned lessons to the whole class, then seamlessly move into differentiated learning tailored to student needs.

So how does the model work?.

  1. Each lesson starts with 15 minutes of teacher-led explicit teaching—ensuring all students engage with core concepts. To support you, ready-to-use lesson plans provide structured guidance, complete with worked examples, key questions, and suggested teaching strategies.
  2. Students then complete 5 minutes of online practice exercises to reinforce their understanding, giving teachers real-time insights into student progress.
  3. Next, students move into differentiated, scaffolded learning activities—tailored to their individual needs. Instructive automatically diagnoses each student’s current level through structured questions, ensuring they work within their zone of proximal development.
  4. Every two weeks, students take an automatically generated test based on what they’ve learned. This ensures assessment is directly aligned with their explicit teaching and differentiated learning activities.
  5. Teachers use this detailed data on student achievement to help inform their explicit teaching.
  6. Students are more engaged in maths, less anxious and deeply understand the maths they learn, better preparing them for senior levels of mathematics.

Instructive is more than just a classroom tool, it’s a complete teaching model packed with powerful resources for teachers, including:

  • Ready-made, curriculum-aligned lesson plans
  • Teacher app for class planning and lesson management
  • Real-time student data to track knowledge gaps and progress
  • Scope and sequence documents aligned to your school’s curriculum
  • Customisable course planning to suit your school’s needs
  • Projects with full student handouts, teacher instructions, worked solutions, and marking guides
  • Automatic assessment generation
  • Teacher intervention tools to support struggling students
  • Senior readiness data
  • Reporting templates and grading tools

And because it’s designed to fit a variety of classroom contexts, Instructive is ideal for schools looking to maintain a consistent maths curriculum while giving teachers the ability to adapt their delivery to suit their students.
