Still not ready to start the journey towards true differentiation in your classroom?
Here's some more information that will help you make up your mind!
The impact of gaps
Place value

A student has a misconception about a place value
Division

Which causes them frustration when performing division
Fractions

Which makes fractions hard to understand
Slope

Which impeded their ability to calculate the slope of a line
Gaps in understanding can have far-reaching impacts on students understanding of mathsmatics, and their eventual outcomes. Maths Pathway was designed in part to identify and address these gaps.
Every student is unique
Their journey of learning maths should be too. We’ve made the first step towards differentiation free for all Australian teachers to access
Tell me more about the tool
Takes on average 30 minutes for students to complete
Flexible, it fits your current plans. No time to run during class? Set it for homework, or do 10 minutes at the start of class over the next 2 weeks!
In one sitting, this takes around 30 minutes
In 10 minute chunks across a few lessons
Or set the diagnostic as homework!
Provides teachers with individual as well as class-level data on gaps and competencies across the whole Maths Curriculum

Enables teachers to group student to better target their practice

Provides vital information to support teachers who want to individualise student learning and better target explicit instruction

Tell me more about the data
For each student, there is really granular data against about 500 individual learning statements;
organised by topic and year level within the curriculum/syllabus. This is also wrapped up into
student levels by topic area.
Reference data from tens of thousands of students across Australia is used. Those students were
tested directly on each one of those 500 individual learning statements independently - which
takes much longer than 30 minutes. Using this reference data, adaptive algorithms can make
excellent statistical inferences like any artificial intelligence (AI) computer system.
Sure, but what is the catch?
When we say free we mean free! All you need to do is sign up to gain access. Once you run the diagnostic with your class you will have the option to book a 30 minutes call with one of our consultants to unlock these bonus features: use with all your classes, unpack the data and discuss insights with an expert, access energisers and lesson plans you can immediately use with your class.. And yes, all this is FREE!

FAQs
Classes and students
You can add them one at a time, or in bulk (by copy-pasting from a spreadsheet). You can add more students over time the same way if you need to. Click “Step 2: Click to add your students to your class” on the main page.
Yes, once you’ve been upgraded to the unlocked version (which is still free).
This upgrade happens once you have had a consultation with a Maths Pathway data expert to help unpack and analyse your student data. You can book in this consultation once you’ve gathered some diagnostic data with your students. The consultation has a fee of $327, but there are some limited offers that might allow you to get this for free too! Email partnerships@mathspathway.com if you’d like to find out more.
You hand out printed login cards with all the details they need. It tells them the address of the website to visit. From there, they click on their name, and input the password from their login card.

Using the diagnostic tool
A computer (or a tablet like an iPad) with internet access; and some working out paper and a pen. There is no need for a calculator; one will show up on screen if they are meant to use it for a particular question.
Students can usually finish it comfortably within 30 minutes. Some students may finish a bit earlier than that. They are presented with six sets of questions. Their performance on one set of questions determines which set they’re asked next.
No problem - there’s no need to do it all in one sitting. Students could do little five minute chunks; or even finish it for homework. Whenever students log back in, they pick up where they left off. No progress is lost.
No special setup is required. All these options work at any time. Students can log in at any time and complete some or all of the diagnostic. When they log out, their progress is saved - and they pick up where they left off next time. All you need to do is hand out the login cards and give whatever instructions make most sense for your class.
This would affect how they went through the diagnostic in an unhelpful way. For example, a student who gets several questions wrong in a row may disengage with the remainder of the test, giving incorrect data.
For each student, there is really granular data against about 500 individual learning statements; organised by topic and year level within the curriculum/syllabus. This includes organisation by substrand and content descriptor. The data is also wrapped up into student levels by topic area. These are shown in the videos below.
Reference data from tens of thousands of students across Australia is used. Those students were tested directly on each one of those 500 individual learning statements independently - which takes much longer than 30 minutes. Using this reference data, adaptive algorithms can make excellent statistical inferences like any machine learning or artificial intelligence (AI) computer system.
A student's level is calculated by the sum of the proportions of modules that they have mastered at each level.
For example, if a student has mastered all of levels 1 through 5, half of level 6 and half of level 7, their overall level will be 6 (1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 0.5 + 0.5).
The same rule applies across substrands, strands and the overall level. However, when calculating levels for particular strands or substrands, a constant is sometimes added. This is used where the curriculum doesn't start at level 1. For instance, Real Numbers begins at level 7, so a constant of 6.00 would be added to the above calculation.

A 5-10 minute teacher-led activity which is very easy to run with almost no preparation time.
Like the diagnostic, energisers are a small component of Maths Pathway’s full learning and teaching model. Here are some sample tasks, and a video that shows what you get once you’ve upgraded to the unlocked version (which is still free).
Other components of the full model include mini-lessons, module activities, video instruction, peer-to-peer support, regular formative assessments, targeted interventions, student-led reflections, one-on-one feedback interviews, exams, semester report generation, course documentation, and professional development. About this tool
Don’t worry - we can still help! You can reach out to us for a free conversation so we can find the best way to help. Contact us here.
This tool is provided by Maths Pathway - a social enterprise started in 2013 by Australian teachers. Maths Pathway partners with over 300 schools around Australia to improve how mathematics is taught in years F-10. You can learn more about our organisation here.
The way schools join this movement is by having a conversation with us about their needs, challenges and aspirations around mathematics instruction in their context, and see if our approach might be a good fit. Quite often it is: one out of two such conversations generally result in the school choosing to take up this approach.
But there’s a challenge in growing this movement: as teachers, we’re all super-busy - and it’s hard to find time to get the conversations started. That’s why we’re providing this free tool. To help teachers across the country understand their students better, and to act as a conversation-starter in some schools to see if there are more people out there we could help with our model.
The Maths Pathway Diagnostic Tool is free, and there is no charge for ongoing usage. At the end of each school year, you may be sent an email asking you to confirm to keep your account into the next year - this is so that any inactive accounts aren’t slowing things down for others. At some point in the future, it is possible that we may need to discontinue hosting/support for the free tool; but there are currently no plans to do so. You can continue freely for the foreseeable future.
1 The Maths Pathway Diagnostic Tool is available to Australian teachers only. Free access to the tool will be provided for as long as Maths Pathway can continue to support and host the application. Maths Pathway reserves the right to discontinue access to this tool at any time.
